 Besides its many welfare institutions, the diocese organizes, developmental programmes in all the parishes. Kottayam Social Service Society (KSSS) and Malabar Social Service Society (MASSS) are the two registered organizations that coordinate the developmental activities. The social service of the Diocese of Kottayam is open for all people who deserve help.

Kottayam Social Service Society (KSSS)

      Kottayam Social Service Society (KSSS) was established in 1964 by the Catholic Diocese of Kottayam as a non-profit charitable society (Reg. no. K. 15 / 1964) to serve the poor and unemployed without discrimination of caste and creed. The society has started various institutions and organizations for the development and welfare of the poor. It is associated with various governmental and non-governmental organizations in India and abroad. The society is also registered under Foreign Contribution Regulation Act in 1985.

KSSS facilitates and forms self-help organizations. Organizing and empowering the Poor, Women, Widows, Handicapped, Aged, Children and the unorganized and marginalized sections of the society irrespective of caste and creed. KSSS cares for the human conditions of these people in Kottayam, Alapuzha, Idukhi, Pathanamthitta and Ernakulam civil districts of Kerala.

Central office of KSSS is situated  at Chaithanya on the M. C Road side  at Thellakom, Kottayam.  Eight professionally qualified and skilled staffs in the central office take leadership of various Development Programmes under the guidance of the Secretary. 10 Regional Level Co-coordinators and 86 Field staff working with KSSS are well trained to face the developmental challenges of the millennium.

 Vision, Mission, and Objective

 The vision of the society is establishment of a just society where all enjoy equality, fraternity, peace, and happiness. Our mission is to motivate and empower the backward to accelerate their own development so that they decide their own destiny and they live with dignity. Objective of KSSS is to empower the backward in our operational areas like women, senior citizens, physically handicapped, mentally retarded, children with learning disabilities, unemployed girls, and ladies bearing full family responsibility including widows, separated, abandoned, single, and ladies with irresponsible or unhealthy husbands for their sustainable development aiming at social transformation for a just society. The motto of the society is AWARENESS ENABLING DEVELOPMENT.

 KSSS &  MASSS

 To coordinate the social activities under Kottayam Diocese in Malabar regions Malabar Social Service Society (MASSS) was started in 1992 (Reg. No. 690/92). Since last ten years MASSS in collaboration with KSSS works in 48 villages, which covers 6  civil districts of Kerala and two districts of Karnataka. Fr. Thomas Karimpumkala is the Secretary of MASSS. In collaboration with KSSS, MASSS is committed to organize people to empower them for their own development.

Focus area and Target Groups:

 The operational areas of KSSS include 5 civil districts of Kerala state and more than 40,000 families in 76 rural villages.The districts are Kottayam, Iduki, Pathanamthitta, Ernakulam, and Alapuzha.

Our focus groups are:  Women, Single Mothers and Abandoned Women, youth and children, Marginal farmers and Economically backward, Disabled and Senior Citizens.

 Thrust Areas:

 Along with target groups KSSS has identified major areas for developmental intervention. They are:

·        Human Resource Development.

·        Sustainable Agriculture, Environment and natural resource management.

·        Gender Equity, Productive and entrepreneurial Development.

·        Social and physical infrastructure Development.

·        Employment and income generation.
